I am getting a tooth extracted and braces fitted a few weeks later.
I’ve worked all year to try and gain weight, and I am facing losing it all because I will not be able to eat whole foods for a while.
Is there any way I can avoid weight loss in this situation?

you still will be able to eat whole foods. just chew with the opposite side of your mouth when you get the tooth pulled. and with braces you just have to be careful of certain foods. like super sticky, or hard foods
caramels. apples, celery etc.. you could always drink protein drinks
or drinks like ensure to get vitamins.

There are many products out there that are used in hospitals for just the situation. Many can be purchased at grocery stores or Walgreens, such as Boost or Ensure (I think most places make generics too). You could try those, they are supplemental drinks and come in a variety of flavors. For example, I’m looking at a can of Ensure High Protein (Creamy milk chocolate flavor) right now and the 8 oz can provides 230 Calories, 12 g protein, 6 g fat, 31 g carbohydrate. Locate a Registered Dietitian in your area to find out about more specific products. For this one, you would need to drink almost 10 cans per day to maintain a 2000 Calorie diet. There are other products that come more concentrated so you get more Calories with less volume. You could also find out about adding Benecalorie (a product that you mix into drinks such as these that adds an extra 2 or 3 hundred Calories. If looking on-line for products, try Ross Nutrition or Nestle. If you get tired of all the drinks being sweet, try pureeing regular foods or soups. Yum yum!
